Chapter 1: Understanding Your Journey
Embarking on the path to self-improvement is a deeply personal experience. It's essential to recognize that evolving into a better version of yourself is entirely achievable.

At times, I find myself ensnared by how others perceive me. My current objective is to liberate myself from these external judgments. I often ponder whether I am seen as the rebellious one, the obedient teen, the naive young adult, or simply as the person I have become today. In many ways, I am still unraveling my identity. The past few years have provided a valuable opportunity for introspection and self-evaluation.
Over the last decade, I have dedicated time to addressing my anxiety, which has made me feel both inadequate at times and at peace during others. Engaging in self-work is crucial before you can offer support to others.
Have you ever heard the expression about filling your cup first? I once viewed that as selfish, but I now understand the importance of taking a step back when necessary. This is especially true for individuals like me who are naturally inclined to overcommit.
However, I must also extend the same compassion to myself that I wish to offer others as I strive to become a more thoughtful, kind, and goal-oriented person.
Having completed my education with a terminal degree, I became so accustomed to juggling school, work, and multiple responsibilities that I began to fill my free time with various side projects.
Yet, I constantly remind myself that rest, self-care, and personal growth are interconnected. Yes, I have projects I could tackle, but they are not urgent enough to sacrifice my weekends for completion.
In this ongoing journey of self-reflection, I would like to share some resources that have aided my personal and professional development.
Section 1.1: Resources for Personal Growth
Become a Better Version of Yourself
One significant area I've focused on over the years is becoming actively antiracist and acknowledging my implicit biases. The Harvard Project Implicit website offers a range of tests to help assess your biases on crucial social issues. This serves as an excellent starting point for further learning, such as reading "How to Be an Antiracist" by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi.
Inspirational Literature
While my time in graduate school left little room for leisure reading, I've since explored materials that motivate me to pursue my dreams. Two particularly impactful books are "Hello Fears" by Michelle Poler and "Year of Yes" by Shonda Rhimes. Both emphasized the importance of embracing new opportunities and not allowing fear to deter me. For instance, sharing my blog and YouTube channel has been a daunting endeavor, especially with an upcoming membership relaunch focused on personal growth that I've been developing for a year.
Free Online Learning
There are countless avenues for acquiring knowledge without a hefty price tag. While I invested significantly in my education, many free resources are now available online. YouTube and various educational websites provide free courses, some of which are worth considering for paid memberships if you wish to further your professional learning. I previously wrote a blog post detailing sites I utilize for free courses on topics of interest—essential tools on the path to self-improvement.
Therapy and Counseling
I firmly believe that nearly everyone can benefit from speaking with a professional outside their regular interactions. This practice aids in processing experiences, developing strategies for changing thought patterns, and addressing trauma. If you're uncertain about where to begin, resources from the CDC or the National Alliance on Mental Illness can be helpful. My counseling journey has significantly enhanced my self-awareness and confidence.
Positive Affirmations
Alongside therapy, positive affirmations have been instrumental in my transformation. I start each day with affirmations and keep my annual goals displayed next to my mirror on index cards, categorized by focus areas. Each day, these reminders reinforce my belief in my ability to achieve my aspirations.
In conclusion, it's never too late to reshape your thoughts, learn new concepts to unlearn old ones, and become the person you aspire to be. Don't let fear or time constraints hold you back. Dedicate just five minutes each day to focus on self-improvement, gradually increasing that time as you feel able.
I believe in your potential! You can truly become a better version of yourself.
