David, thank you for taking the time to speak with us. Can you share how you found your way into this profession?

My journey into public relations was quite unexpected. Many professionals in this field have similarly stumbled into their roles. I began my career as a copywriter at a marketing firm focused on healthcare and finance. Afterward, I transitioned into various communications roles, often blending marketing and PR.

About eight years ago, I took a hybrid position at a startup in the moving industry. I quickly realized that by concentrating on PR, I could significantly contribute to the company's success. My managers supported my focus on PR, and we enjoyed remarkable media coverage nationwide.

This led to an exciting opportunity to help launch a cannabis startup on the West Coast. Although that venture was successful, when the team wanted everyone to relocate, my wife, Natalie, and I established Heed PR in 2018.

Working in public relations is truly fulfilling for me. We collaborate closely with our clients to meet their business objectives by enhancing their public personas.

The Most Memorable Experiences

As a PR professional, the most fascinating stories often come from our clients' experiences. We're always in the background, supporting them as they shine in the spotlight.

One remarkable aspect of Heed PR is that in nearly four years, we've never had to make a sales call or attend lead-generation events; all our business comes from inbound inquiries. This was a delightful surprise.

Initially, I started the agency full-time while Natalie worked her job. We hoped she could transition to full-time after a year. However, the overwhelming influx of clients prompted us to expedite her joining the agency within three months.

Funny Mistakes and Valuable Lessons

Like many newcomers, I made my fair share of mistakes without formal training. One significant lesson I learned is the importance of targeted outreach. Early in my career, I mistakenly sent a press release to a broad media list, which included journalists outside of our relevant industry. The backlash was immediate, and I learned that it’s vital to refine media lists and ensure that the outreach is relevant.

I am genuinely excited about the diverse clients we represent. Our roster includes innovative organizations that are consistently recognized with awards. In 2021 alone, our clients received honors from the Inc. 5000 and the Deloitte Technology Fast 500 lists, among others. Our role is to highlight the remarkable work these clients do.

As a leader, I believe three key traits have been instrumental in my success:

  1. Empathy: Understanding the needs of clients and media professionals is crucial. Each strategy we develop is tailored to the unique circumstances of our clients.
  2. Teachable Spirit: My natural curiosity drives me to seek continuous improvement. For example, I recently registered for a webinar on pitching strategies to enhance my skills further.
  3. Tenacity: The PR field can feel like a sales environment where persistence is key. Even with a well-crafted pitch, rejection is common, but resilience is essential for success.

PR can vary significantly based on organizational goals. Startups often require different strategies compared to established companies. We guide our clients to define their PR needs, tailoring our approach to achieve their specific objectives.

Education Pathways for Future PR Pros

While a degree in communications or journalism can be beneficial, my own background in Education and American History demonstrates that diverse academic paths can lead to a successful PR career. Strong writing skills, gained during my studies, have been particularly valuable in my journey.

Networking is vital for success in public relations. Building relationships early on can yield significant benefits when launching a business. Personal connections and word-of-mouth referrals are invaluable in this industry.

At Heed PR, all our leads come from inbound inquiries. Prioritizing quality leads is essential. For example, one of our clients, Market Street Partners, created a blog series that highlighted their successful clients. This approach not only showcased their expertise but also attracted more qualified leads.
